After fighting against nearly 60 years of “expert campers” in my family, I finally learned that there isn’t just ONE WAY to go camping. It was a liberating moment when it became apparent that my over-thinking and over-preparing for camping could be…skipped. That I would actually enjoy the trip more if I didn’t…follow…the rules…of camping. And just the same, I found years later that there isn’t just ONE WAY to conduct software testing. There are alternatives, perspectives, contexts and situations that change the specific demands and requirements of good testing practices. And I’ve learned that I would actually enjoy my work, and produce better outcomes, if I didn’t…follow…the rules…of testing. I’ll share my own story of self-discovery and liberation as a software tester. No actual camping will be required.
